Kevin Bacon
July 8, 1958 - Present
Kevin Bacon picture Birth Place : Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Kevin Norwood Bacon (born July 8, 1958 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American film and theater actor who has starred in Footloose, Stir of Echoes, Wild Things, JFK, and Apollo 13, among many others. He has been married to actress Kyra Sedgwick since September 3, 1988. They have two children, Travis Sedg and Sosie Ruth Bacon.

Bacon's father was the noted city planner Edmund Norwood Bacon and his mother was Ruth Hilda Holmes, a teacher and liberal political activist. In 1995, Kevin and his older brother, Michael Bacon, formed a band, The Bacon Brothers, and have been touring on and off since then.

The Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon

Bacon is the subject of the trivia game, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. It is based on the idea that, due to his prolific screen career, any Hollywood actor can be "linked" to another in a handful of "steps" based on their associations with Bacon. Although it has since been proven that there are other "better" centers of the Hollywood universe than Bacon, such as Sean Connery, Rod Steiger, or the prolific Michael Caine (who never turns down a role), Bacon's name remained the focus because he was the first one picked by the creators of the game, and because his name "Kevin Bacon" sounds like the original word in the phrase "Six degrees of separation."

The "A minus" List

Despite his prolificacy, ability and leading man looks, Bacon has never achieved "A-list" stardom.[citation needed] Although frequently cast as the lead in independent films and minor releases, when appearing in major motion pictures he tends to be cast in a supporting role or as part of an ensemble. In a Men's Edge article by A.D. Amorosi (summarized in the February 4, 2005 issue of The Week), Bacon talks about the poor judgment he exercised in his acting career. He said he failed to capitalize on the success of Footloose by waiting for serious roles that never came in the film's aftermath, turning down several good movie roles in the process. "People in this business say that you get three bombs before you're yesterday's news. I had four, five," going into the early 1990s. Elaborating on his career philosophy to E! Online, Bacon explains his preference of engaging violent and risqué, to uninspiring and tame, roles: "I'm more embarrassed by the nicey-nice movies I've made," he said.
